Ivermectin Storage, Shelf Life and Expiry Dates

Ivermectin is a chemically stable molecule, and tablets stored correctly retain their potency well across their labelled shelf life. Most of the loss of potency people worry about comes not from the passage of time but from heat, humidity and light — which is why how you store it matters more than how long you have had it.

Correct storage conditions

FormTemperatureOther
TabletsBelow 25 °C / 77 °FOriginal blister until use; dry; away from direct light
1% cream20–25 °C / 68–77 °FDo not freeze; cap tightly; avoid bathroom humidity

A bedroom drawer or a kitchen cupboard away from the oven is a better location than a bathroom cabinet. Bathrooms cycle through high heat and humidity every time someone showers, and moisture is the main enemy of tablet stability.

Leave tablets in their blister foil until the moment of use. The blister is a moisture and light barrier; decanting into a pill organiser days in advance removes that protection.

What the expiry date means

A pharmaceutical expiry date is the point up to which the manufacturer guarantees the product meets its full specification — typically at least 90 percent of the labelled active content — under the stated storage conditions. It is a guarantee boundary, not a cliff edge at which the drug becomes inert or harmful.

The most extensive public data on this is the US Department of Defense and FDA Shelf Life Extension Program, which tested large stockpiles of drugs held past their expiry. A substantial majority of tested solid oral products remained within specification for years beyond the printed date when stored properly.

That is a statement about population-level stability data, not a recommendation to use expired medicine. For a defined course of treatment where efficacy matters, in-date product stored correctly is the right choice.

How ivermectin degrades

The main degradation routes are hydrolysis in the presence of moisture, oxidation, and photodegradation from ultraviolet light. All three are slow at room temperature in a sealed blister and all three accelerate sharply with heat and humidity.

Warning signs that a tablet has been badly handled include discolouration, crumbling or softening, visible spotting, a change in smell, or blister foil that is punctured, swollen or lifting at the edges. Any of these mean the product should not be used regardless of the printed date.

For the 1% cream, separation of the emulsion, a change in colour or texture, or a rancid smell all indicate the product has broken down.

Signs of a properly supplied product

Genuine human pharmaceutical ivermectin arrives in sealed manufacturer blisters carrying a printed batch or lot number and an expiry date, inside a carton bearing the manufacturer name and strength. Loose tablets in an unlabelled bag, missing batch numbers, or blisters with hand-written dates are all reasons for concern.

Products shipped in extreme summer heat without any thermal consideration can arrive already compromised. Reputable suppliers ship promptly and avoid leaving stock sitting in transit over long periods in hot conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Does ivermectin expire?

Yes. Tablets carry an expiry date, typically two to three years from manufacture, which is the point up to which the manufacturer guarantees full labelled potency under stated storage conditions.

Does expired ivermectin still work?

Solid oral drugs stored properly often retain most of their potency past the printed date, and the FDA Shelf Life Extension Program found a majority of tested products remained within specification for years. That is stability data, not a recommendation. For treatment where efficacy matters, use in-date product.

Should I refrigerate ivermectin?

No. Tablets and cream are both stored at controlled room temperature. Refrigeration is unnecessary and, for the cream, cold can affect the emulsion. Never freeze either form.

Can I keep ivermectin in the bathroom?

It is the worst common location. Bathrooms cycle through high humidity and heat, and moisture is the main driver of tablet degradation. A dry bedroom drawer or kitchen cupboard away from heat is much better.

How can I tell if my ivermectin has gone bad?

Look for discolouration, crumbling, softening, spotting, an unusual smell, or blister foil that is punctured, swollen or lifting. Any of these mean the product should not be used regardless of the printed expiry date.
